The office of deacon is described in the New Testament (1 Tim. 3:8-13) where the Greek word “diakonos” is used from which the English "deacon" is derived. The Greek word is variously interpreted as "servant, minister, writer, attendant" and in Christian circles acquired the specialized meaning now attached to "deacon".
The Deacon Ministry (formerly the Deacon Board) was formed around September 1924 under the leadership of the Late Reverend J. Wheeler, Pastor and Founder.
The purpose of this office is to assist the Pastor in the interest of the church body. In the absence of the Pastor, it becomes the duty of the deacons to provide spiritual leadership and supply the pulpit and administer the affairs of the church body.
The goals of the Deacon Ministry are:
- to be better helpers in the vineyard;
- to be more faithful and devout Christian men;
- to be leaders of honest report, filled with the Holy Spirit; and
- to be ready to serve and witness for Christ.
- visit the sick and shut-in as well as pray for and with them;
- serve communion to the sick and shut-in and the entire church body with the Pastor;
- assist with baptism (interviewing candidates for membership);
- oversee prayer service; and
- assist the Pastor on all church matters.
The Deacon Ministry has the following elected offices: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Corresponding Secretary, and Chaplain. The Deacon Ministry meets monthly or as needed.
